The Balearic Islands is one of the destinations that I’ve missed while living in Spain, but this May, I finally got to visit the gorgeous island of Mallorca.
A lot of travel agencies are presenting Mallorca as Europe’s luxury destination, but you really don’t need that much money if you know how to organize well.
Let’s begin with plane tickets:
My route was: Budapest – Barcelona / Barcelona – Mallorca / Mallorca – Madrid / Madrid – Budapest
All of that for 120e! So 4 plane tickets for that price! Ryanair literally has tickets from Barcelona to Mallorca from 15 euros.
The “trick” is in the mixing different airlines, being patient while searching for low fares and being flexible with your time.
RENT A CAR
Once you arrive, it’s time to explore. I do not recommend visiting Mallorca without renting a car. You can see the island’s capital city – Palma, but visiting nicer beaches is quite hard and exhausting, since public transport is very slow, and it doesn’t cover some of the smaller villages.
*TIP: Don’t rent a car from popular companies like Sixt, Hertz, Enterprise,… they are more expensive, they require a deposit, + they have age restrictions. Use local companies. At the airport exits you can find persons who are advertising their smaller companies with signs or tablets. There we were able to find a car for only 160e for 4 days, without deposit and without age restrictions! To be honest, at the beginning we were afraid that it’s a scam, but everything was perfectly fine!
Mallorca is a small island – you can easily get from south to north in 1 hour. That’s how we got to visit a few beaches per day! There are a lot of things to see there, so it’s important to plan your days wisely.
Of course that accommodation costs less if you go off season, and that’s what we did. May was pretty hot already, so that was the right time for us. September would be perfect too, but if you can’t be that flexible, it doesn’t matter.
My tip for you would be to use booking.com , use it only to see hotels and apartments, and then try to find them on google, and make the reservation directly from their site. It’s usually much cheaper. But you can also try my custom link for reservations on this site, and get 10% off!
We can agree that our hotel was quite luxurious, but believe it or not, we have payed only 90e per person, for a full stay!!
If you you prefer airbnb or apartments, and if you already have a car rental, you can be situated somewhere more central, for example in Pollenca, Arta or Santanyi. The beach house is not obligatory, especially if you only need a 15-20min ride by car to the beach. That way you can save a lot of money!
In the next post I will write about all the places and beaches you should visit once you’re there!
